Alaska Public Health Laboratory & State Medical Examiner
This building serves two distinct but inter-related public agencies: Public Health and Public Safety. The challenge was to design a facility that incorporated the distinct needs of the two agencies – including security and safety (for the public and for the scientists) – with common, publicly accessible areas, while also respecting the local natural environment. The Public Health Laboratory portion includes office spaces, BSL Labs 2 and 3 as well as a training laboratory. The Medical Examiner Facility includes autopsy suites, coolers, embalming rooms and a private, secure delivery sally port.
The building was designed with the future in mind. All of the systems as well as the structure were developed to allow expansion and technological upgrades. The mechanical system is a study in efficiency as it must separate the Laboratories and autopsy suite air systems from that of the offices without compromising the integrity of the facility.
