A new 120 Unit Senior Housing Complex designed by Livingston Slone gets the green light:
Anchorage Senior Housing Complex
The Anchorage Assembly took action to advance a new project that will replace the municipal DHHS Health Center; provide a new private Mixed Use Development at Tudor and Elmore Roads; and a new Senior Housing Complex at 9th Ave. & L Street.

Anchorage has been working for years toward becoming a more walkable, pedestrian friendly city. Livingston Slone’s design will provide a mix of affordable and market-rate housing units for young seniors who are still active, 55 and older, and who desire to make use of the arts, cultural, visitor, restaurant and hospitality amenities that downtown Anchorage has to offer. Also featured is commercial retail space to contain a cafĂ©/bistro, barber shop, pharmacy and other leasable spaces, creating new street scene activity along 8th & 9 th Avenues and L Street. Grade level and rooftop garden spaces will overlook the Delaney Park Strip to the south, creating a symbiosis between the green spaces for both residents and visitors.

The design of the Downtown Senior Housing project will be appropriate for the urban, modern feel Anchorage is embracing. Currently, the vision for this project calls for 120 units of housing comprised of studio, 1-bedroom and 2 bedroom units. Senior-focused amenities planned for this development include:

  • Grade-level outdoor gathering space with landscape and hardscape elements that provide a park-like setting on site.
  • Rooftop garden space for social gatherings for residents.
  • A car sharing service that allows residents short term (hourly) use of vehicles for errands and outings.
  • Retail services which are either under-represented or not currently available in downtown Anchorage, including a small pharmacy.
  • On-site resident building manager and concierge service.
  • Office space for senior advocate services.
  • Large, well-appointed, multi-purpose common area for residents, leasable for private gatherings and events.

The common areas for residents will include:

  • Multi-purpose room with kitchenette
  • Exercise / Fitness center
  • Business center
  • Craft / activity room
  • Living room gathering space on every floor
  • Covered drop-off area and heated sidewalks
  • Full kitchens and in-unit laundry in all residential units.
  • Off-street resident and visitor parking on a parcel across 8th Avenue to the North.
